چکیده

Introduction Both in generating human activity and in the visual perception of it, the brain is confronted with the many degrees of freedom involved in the movement of body and limbs. Not unlikely, the perception of motor actions is supported by mechanisms that are very similar to those in control of these actions. Hints towards an interaction between perceptual and action processes can be found in psychophysical studies, such as mental imagery, but also from recordings of single neurons in monkey premotor cortex.

Ideal-observer-model and psychophysical experiments on the role of form information in biologial motion perception

’Biological motion perception’ refers to the impressive ability of human observers to visually identify the motion of humans or animals solely from the moving patterns of a small number of light points attached to the body. Although the first experiments concerning the perception of biological motion already took place in 1973 [1] the perceptual mechanisms are still poorly understood. Based on ...

Contribution of coherent motion to the perception of biological motion among persons with Schizophrenia

People with schizophrenia (SCZ) are impaired in several domains of visual processing, including the discrimination and detection of biological motion. However, the mechanisms underlying SCZ-related biological motion processing deficits are unknown. Moreover, whether these impairments are specific to biological motion or represent a more widespread visual motion processing deficit is unclear. In...

Electrophysiological markers of biological motion and human form recognition

Current models suggest that human form and motion information are initially processed through separate pathways, then integrated in action perception. Testing such a sequential model requires techniques with high temporal resolution. Prior work demonstrated sensitivity of a posterior temporal event-related potential (ERP) effect - the N2 - to biological motion, but did not test whether the N2 i...

The role of visual movement patterns in the perception of moving biological organisms

of moving biological organisms was well demonstrated by the introduction of point-light stimuli (Johansson, 1973). From only a few moving point lights, attached to the joints of an otherwise invisible moving actor, people readily perceive the underlying human figure, categorize the displayed action after viewing it for only fractions of a second (Johansson, 1976), and can even perform subtle ta...
